Surfaces

A new dimension of perception.

Papier Français presents Surfaces, a renewed exploration of the wall as an architectural and sensorial medium.
Conceived through space and light, Surfaces unfolds as a measured dialogue between material and perception. Texture establishes rhythm. Colour grounds the room. Illumination becomes active rather than decorative, revealing form through movement and proximity. Perception is not immediate; it is revealed gradually.

The collection brings together three surface concepts, each examining the wall through a distinct yet complementary approach, shaping a shared territory where material comes alive, where light lingers and gently reveals itself, like a presence both profound and quietly vibrant.

  • "Contrasts": developed in collaboration with light artist Robert Follie, approaches light as a material presence. Lines emerge, withdraw and reappear as daylight moves across the surface, allowing walls to transform throughout the day. Shadow becomes architectural, activating emotion through depth, restraint and scale. The wall shifts from static plane to responsive structure.

  • "Etches": created with architectural design studio Undo, explores surface through precision and functional logic. Rooted in technical processes, linear grooves are carved directly into the material, producing discreet variations in tone and texture. Depth is articulated through repetition and constraint, allowing light to register as a consequence of form rather than ornament.

  • "Traces": developed with ink artist Myriam de Fay, approaches the wall as a spirited surface shaped by gesture, rhythm and material memory. Emerging from an exploration of ink and movement, hand-drawn striations unfold in measured sequences. Lines gather, soften and disperse, forming atmospheric fields that evolve with light and shifting perspectives. Printed on sisal and silk, ink settles into the fibre, allowing light to move gently across the surface and reveal depth over time. The wall becomes a register of nuance, continuity and quiet permanence. Several patterns designed by architects Nadezhda Mendes da Rocha and Joanna Mendes da Rocha complete this collection. They emerged from a desire to explore theuniverse of stamp-based prints. Leaves, seeds, and flowers are transformed into patterns and compositions that unfold into new visual landscapes.

  • "Surface Studies": a collection of remarkable fabrics developed in collaboration with Joro, extend this material conversation, reinforcing Papier Français’ commitment to timeless elegance and avant-garde savoir-faire, while remaining faithful to the values of Papier Français. A world where beauty transcends time without ever losing its power to captivate, where the heritage and charm of the past blend naturally with the boldness of the present to shape a contemporary style where craftsmanship becomes a true expression of emotion, creativity, and excellence.

Surfaces Lighting

This innovative lighting system, conceived to bring the Surfaces collections to life, was initially developed to meet the challenge of illuminating Surfaces creations. Designed in collaboration with Atelier Robert Follie, Surfaces Lighting offers a solution that responds precisely to the complexities of lighting wall-based artworks, combining high performance with remarkable simplicity of implementation. The Surfaces Lighting products developed through this collaboration will be commercialized by Papier Français from February 2026, providing a new and meaningful answer to the question of how mural art should be illuminated.
