For the centenary of the 1925 Exposition of Decorative and Industrial Arts, Papier Français celebrates the creative boldness of a movement that revolutionized decorative arts while proving its enduring modernity. This collection explores a unique moment when ornamentation was reinvented through bold geometry, sophisticated line patterns, elegant abstractions, and a constant quest for formal innovation.

Part 1 : RENÉ CREVEL.

In partnership with the “Fondation René Crevel”, this collection includes a series of wallpapers signed by René Crevel (1892-1971), an artist, architect, painter, and decorator who had a significant influence on the emergence and evolution of the Art Deco style. Georges Normandy was telling about him in 1917 : “We will owe to him wallpapers that would make the old craftsmen of Rixheim jealous, colored images that would make Guy Arnoux despair, furnishings that would send Iribe and André Groult into a frenzy, illustrations that would impress Carlègle and Delaw, painted canvases that would overshadow the old Jouy fabrics...“.

Part 2 : ART DECO 1925.

The Grantil manufacture, founded in 1911, quickly became one of the first wallpaper houses to adopt the codes of Art Deco. It distinguished itself through its innovative designs, stylized motifs, and refined use of colors and textures. Its wallpapers were defined by bold geometry, clean shapes and elements inspired by orientalism or stylized nature. They captured the modern spirit of the era while incorporating an aesthetic richness that perfectly matched the sophistication and taste of the bourgeoisie of the Art Deco period.

The Leroy manufacture, founded in 1820, also left its mark on the Art Deco era by modernizing its collections while respecting a tradition of artisanal excellence. Leroy skillfully blended innovation with tradition, offering wallpapers of exceptional quality that combined geometric motifs with those inspired by craftsmanship, often with particular attention to materials. In the 1920s and 1930s, Leroy moved towards more streamlined designs in line with Art Deco trends, as well as decorative papers featuring more luxurious and sophisticated patterns, using gilding, abstract motifs, and unusual textures. The historical patterns are presented in their original colors, faithful witnesses of the time, as well as reinterpreted in current harmonies that breathe new life into them.
